Asparagus is Back for Springtime!
Every spring we bring back the Tempura-Fried Asparagus with Saikyo Miso vinaigrette.
Also this spring we are introducing Grilled Asparagus served w. Japanese Pickled Plum and Shiso Vinaigrette.
Pickled plums, umeboshi, are a spring time tradition in Japan. The Plum Tree blossoms first, before the Cherry blossoms arrive, and this really heralds the change of seasons.
Umeboshi is a unique tart taste coupled with Shiso, a Japanese style mint, that works great with the grilled asparagus. Light, healthy, flavorful.

Name that tune (video)
Ok, even though this is a commercial it kind of represents much of what I like about Japan. Not just the beautiful mountains covered in pine and mist, but the producing of something creative, employing a craft like woodwork, a precise attention to detail, patience and diligence in making each piece sound the correct tone. It speaks to me of traditional Japanese attributes still being utilized in a modern world. How the heck did I get all that from a commercial.
